Camilla Harrison, the cook for José Cuervo, was searching for ingredients to enhance a sangrita (a popular tequila accompaniment), she combined pequin and árbol peppers native to Jalisco with zesty citrus juices. With the support of the José Cuervo family, the sauce quickly gained popularity and became a staple in Mexican markets and stores nationwide.

Today Cholula is a top brand in the USA and Mexico, and is popular worldwide.
